Why do we work with Eating Disorders? Addiction? Trauma?
Our passion is rooted in self awareness stemming from the navigation of our own body stories. Our stories include difficulties accepting the changes our bodies endured while learning to appreciate the resiliency of the mind and body. We want to share our knowledge, experiences and techniques to help you find your place of recovery and acceptance whether from an eating disorder, addiction, or trauma.
We take a compassionate and non-judgmental approach to therapy. We believe in a comprehensive approach that focuses work on integration between the mind, body and spirit to create sustainable behavior change. We believe that you already have everything you need to be whole and healthy, and have hope that you can find your way back to your values, and authentic self. A therapist can be a facilitator to help you wade through the vulnerabilities, emotional discomfort and life chaos, to discover patterns and behaviors that maintain the current suffering. From there we will explore new skills, such as self-compassion, mindfulness, and harm reduction, to implement and strengthen the positive attributes you already have.
Our Therapeutic Approach
We use a combination of techniques and theories in our practice, depending on the needs of the individual, couple or family. We most often use Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy, which allows for mindful identification of thoughts, emotions and behaviors to be examined, reframed, accepted or shifted through use of cognitive and behavioral changes. We educate clients on the stages of change model, and techniques that research has shown to be most effective in creating sustainable change.
We also implement mind-body techniques based on current research in neuroscience. Mind-body techniques include the practice of mindfulness, compassion training, meditation and breathing exercises. Mindfulness is the nonjudgmental awareness of what is happening currently. Mindfulness allows for those who may cruise through life on auto-pilot, or maybe suffer from the disease of being overly busy/stressed, to become enlightened to reclaim the rich and full potential of our lives in the present moment. This may mean we utilize various techniques in session together, facilitated purposefully for growth, opening, and exploring the edge of discomfort, in a safe and comfortable environment.
